In the spring, a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of love. In the fall, however, one tends to think more along the lines of elderly German radiologists putting the ol' weinerschnitzel to curvaceous Latina cadavers. Don't you find that to be the case? Admittedly, it is a crowded field, but I think the subject of our next little nauseatingly necrophilic nod to Nordic ingenuity and devotion to the ideals of Venus, goddess of love-- irregardless of the fact that the toe-tagged trollop in question is firmly in the embrace of that ol' rascal Hades-- qualifies as the granddaddy and permanent heartthrob-in-general of the post-mortem priapic set. I speak, of course, of none other than Herr Doktor Count Carl Tanzler von Cosel and his embalmed enamorata, that voluptuous vixen sans vital signs, Elena Hoyos. Be sure you have plenty of Vaseline and barf bags handy as you dig into this toothsome tale of tragedy turned opportunity that I like to call...
Later, Von Cosel secretly moved Elena's body to his home, living with it for seven years, until his deception was uncovered by Elena's sister. Horrified at the discovery, Elena's sister took what appeared be a wax dummy to the local morgue to be autopsied. The "dummy" was actually the decayed corpse of Elena Hoyos; her bones held together with piano wire, her skin had been treated with wax, her eye sockets filled with glass replacements, and she'd been perfumed to mask the odor of decomposition.
Declared sane, Von Cosel was not charged with a crime because the statute of limitations on grave robbing had expired. Elena Hoyos was eventually buried at a secret location. Von Cosel, separated from his love, used a death mask to create a life-sized dummy of her, and lived with it until his death in 1952.

During his childhood in Germany, and later, while traveling briefly in Genoa, Italy, Tanzler claimed to have been visited by visions of a dead ancestor, Countess Anna Constantia von Cosel, who revealed the face of his true love, an exotic dark-haired woman, to him.

Hoyos was eventually diagnosed with tuberculosis, a typically fatal disease at the time, that eventually claimed the lives of almost her entire immediate family. Tanzler, with his self-professed medical "knowledge," attempted to treat and cure Hoyos with a variety of medicines, as well as x-ray and electrical equipment, that were brought to the Hoyos' home.
Tanzler showered Hoyos with gifts of jewelry and clothing, and allegedly professed his love to her, but no evidence has surfaced to show that any of his affection was reciprocated by Hoyos.

Here, he began the job of resurrection.
